Product Overview
Ecolin® LFA is a lignin-derived functional material produced from cotton stalk using a patented process. It is specifically engineered as a drop-in, partial replacement for phenol in PF resin manufacturing—without altering the process chemistry, equipment, or curing parameters.Developed in collaboration with the Indian Plywood Industries Research & Training Institute (IPIRTI) and validated by the Institute of Wood Science & Technology (IWST), Ecolin® LFA enables resin producers and plywood manufacturers to adopt a greener, safer, and more cost-efficient adhesive system.
The LPF resins made with Ecolin® LFA have successfully passed IS:303 (General Purpose Plywood) and IS:848:2006 (Synthetic Resin Adhesives – BWR Grade) requirements.
Key Functional Benefits
- Replaces 40–50% of petrochemical phenol in PF resin
- Delivers BWR-grade bond strength with predominant wood failure
- Excellent compatibility with standard roller, curtain, extruder, and foam glue application methods
- Dry solids adjustable to customer needs (formulation flexibility)
- Enhances stability and reduces odour compared to conventional PF resin
- Works with all common veneers (Poplar, Gurjan, Eucalyptus, combi/mirror structures)
- Enables significant cost reduction and carbon reduction

Performance Validation – IWST & IPIRTI
Extensive laboratory and pilot-scale studies confirm that LPF resins manufactured using Ecolin® LFA :
- Meet and exceed BWR-grade bond quality
- Achieve 75–90% wood failure depending on formulation
- Conform to physical & mechanical properties of IS:303 plywood
- Provide pressing times comparable to regular PF resins
- Maintain resin flow time, solids, pH, and free formaldehyde within commercial specifications
The complete 2024 IWST study demonstrates successful performance at 30%, 40%, 50%, and even 60% lignin substitution, with 30–50% offering the best commercial performance.
Typical Applications
Ecolin® LFA is designed for all PF/LPF resin producers and plywood manufacturers:
- PF resin production (for BWR, MR, Marine-grade systems)
- LPF resins for plywood & blockboard
- Wood adhesive manufacturers
- Panel manufacturing (3-ply, 7-ply, combi panels)
- Boiling-water-resistant (BWR) plywood lines
- Green-certified plywood & engineered wood plants
Why Replace Phenol with Ecolin® LFA?
- Reduce dependence on petroleum-derived phenol
- Lower adhesive cost with stable bio-based raw material
- Meets all IS-grade performance requirements
- No changes in process equipment or hot-press parameters
- Compatible with all industrial glue spreaders
- Better glue storage stability than standard PF glues
- Cleaner manufacturing with less odour and easier clean-down
How to Use Ecolin® LFA in Resin Manufacturing
- Replace 40–50% phenol with Ecolin® LFA
- Standard PF resin process parameters remain unchanged
- Adhesive spread: 300–320 g/m²
- Recommended pressing conditions :
- 125–145°C hot press temperature
- 0.25 mm/min pressing rate
- Pre-pressing recommended to optimize bonding
LPF resin formulated using Ecolin® LFA can be applied using any industrial gluing system: roller, curtain, extruder, or foam.
